Stage 8 Tokyo

Sam CROME (AVANTI ISOWHEY SPORT) wins Tokyo Stage
Oscar PUJOL (TEAM UKYO) holds Green Jersey Wearer

The last stage of the 19th Tour of Japan finally reached to Tokyo on Sunday, 5th June and ended the very first 8-day stage race.

The peloton started in Hibiya Park and raced in Oi Minatogaoka Park circuit.

Many fans enjoyed taking photos with riders and asking their autographs before the start of the Stage 8.  About 128,000 people in total gathered in Hibiya Park and also Oi Minatogaoka Park circuit.

After the real start, many attacks were seen and ten riders broke away from the main group when the peloton got into the Oi Minatogaoka Park circuit.

The time gap between the breakaway and the main group was two minutes and thirty seconds at most and the gap didn’t increase the time, because the Stage 7 winner, Yukiya ARASHIRO (LAMPRE – MERIDA) and Kohei UCHIMA (BRIDGESTONE ANCHOR CYCLING TEAM) who is specialized in escape were in the leading group.

In the last lap, many attacks among the leading group happened, but it didn’t work well and eventually Sam CROME (AVANTI ISOWHEY SPORT) won in the final sprint.  Oscar PUJOL (TEAM UKYO) won the 19th Tour of Japan in the end by keeping the time gap of 0:01’05”.

Winner’s comments at the post-race press conference:

Stage 8 winner, Sam CROME (AVANTI ISOWHEY SPORT):
“I worked out for my teammate, Anthorny’s win, try to get a breakaway and am happy to win the stage in the end.”

White Jersey Wearer (Young Rider), Daniel WHITEHOUSE (GERENGGANU CYCLING TEAM):
“I have raced in Tour of Japan many times and enjoyed it for the last three years, but I felt hard in the last few stages this year and am very glad to win the title.”

Blue Jersey Wearer (Point), Pier Paolo DE NEGRI (NIPPO – VINI FANTINI):
“This race is very important for our team, because NIPPO is here in Japan and we did our best to keep the jersey.  The breakaway was a little early, but I am happy to hold the Blue Jersey today.”

Green Jersey Wearer, Oscar PUJOL (TEAM UKYO):
“Our team put importance on winning a race in Japan.  I have been working for the team so far, but I raced for myself this time.  After the Mt. Fuji stage, I tried to keep the Green Jersey and happy to hold it till the end, thanks to my teammates.”

Team Manager of TEAM UKYO, Ukyo KATAYAMA:
“It is very important for Japanese teams to win the TOJ.  I still feel unbelievable that we won the tour and now we should move forward.  Oscar is in the best condition, really wished to beat the Iranian riders and keep the Green Jersey till the end.”

For TEAM UKYO, it is the first time to win the general classification in UCI class 1.
